Best Time to Visit Meghalaya — A Month-by-Month Guide
Meghalaya is a destination with no bad season — just different moods. Here’s what to expect each time of year.
October to February — Peak Season
This is the most popular time and for good reason. Skies are clearest, temperatures are cool and comfortable (10–22°C), and all trekking routes including the Double Decker Root Bridge are fully accessible. Waterfalls are still impressive from the monsoon runoff. Book early — this is when demand from South Indian travellers peaks.
March to May — Shoulder Season
Still pleasant with occasional clear days. Slightly warmer (18–28°C). Fewer crowds, better hotel rates. Good for photography — the landscape is green and atmospheric without the heavy rain.
June to September — Monsoon Season
Meghalaya receives the world’s heaviest rainfall during this period — Mawsynram and Cherrapunji regularly top global rainfall records. The landscape is extraordinarily lush and the waterfalls are at their most dramatic. However, the root bridge trek becomes difficult, some roads get affected by landslides, and outdoor activities are limited. Only recommended for travellers who specifically want the monsoon experience.
Our Recommendation
Travel between October and March for the best all-round experience. If you’re from Chennai, Coimbatore, or Bangalore, you’ll find Meghalaya’s cool climate especially refreshing — a stark contrast to the South Indian heat.
